| Merano
& Surroundings...
Merano, the worldwide famous and elegant
health resort in the hearth of South Tyrol, is worth a visit.
The unusual geographical location - the town is sheltered
to the north and east by high mountain ranges - is the reason
for its mild Mediterranean climate. The centre of all trade
and business activity is still the Laubengasse, Merano's arcades.
The Laubengasse is a sight in its own right, on account of
its rich and varied architecture from various eras ranging
from the Middle Ages to the present, the structure of the
vaulted arcades, and its eventful history. The neighbourhood
shelters a lot of artistic and architectural jewels of the
past centuries: fairytale castles, gothic churches, historical
buildings.
Following
the tracks of the empress Sissi...
Today it is still possible to follow the tracks of one of
the most prominent guests of the thermal city of Merano: the
empress Sissi. Starting from the Botanic Gardens of the Trauttmansdorff
Castle and the Touriseum (Museum of the Tourismus), you can
walk within the very heart of the picturesque city where the
magic flair of the past centuries is still waiting for you
"Ötzi",
the Iceman of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology
The collection on exhibit at the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology
is structured chronologically and documents the entire history
of South Tyrol from the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Age (15,000
BC) to the Carolingian period (around 800 AD). The core of
the collection is certainly Ötzi.
Over 5000 years ago, a man climbed up to the icy heights of
the Schnalstal glacier and died. He was found by accident
in 1991, with his clothes and equipment, mummified and frozen:
an archaeological sensation and a unique snapshot of a Copper
Age man.
