The History of Schildhof Saltaus –
A Testament to Bygone Eras
The Schildhof Saltaus, first mentioned in the 11th century, is the oldest property of its kind in the Passeier Valley, embodying the region’s living history. Originally designed as a fortified farmstead, it served to protect and administer the valley. The so-called “Schildhöfe” formed a network of strategically placed farmsteads safeguarding the Passeier Valley. These unique estates were inhabited by the “Schildhöfler,” farmers of minor nobility appointed by King Henry in 1317. They enjoyed unique rights and privileges, including the authority to govern their farms independently—a rare autonomy in South Tyrol
The Schildhof Saltaus was not only a place of protection but also a social and political hub. It hosted important gatherings and celebrations, and in the early 19th century, it became a focal point of the Tyrolean struggle for freedom. The freedom fighter Andreas Hofer and his allies used the Schildhof as a meeting place to plan their strategies against Bavarian rule.
In 1936, the Pircher family acquired the Schildhof and began preserving and continuing its unique history. With great attention to detail, the historic rooms were carefully restored without losing their original character. Today, guests can feel the aura of centuries past in the charming parlors, low vaulted ceilings, and historic wine cellar. The Schildhof masterfully blends old and new, offering its guests an ambiance that combines authentic Tyrolean tradition with modern comfort.
